Humble King

Many of us have heard the Easter story many times. We know about how the Chief Priests conspired with the Roman authorities to have Jesus unjustly crucified. We know about the disciples, who after swearing allegiance to Jesus, denied him in his darkest hour – especially Judas, who betrayed him to the Chief Priests. We know about Pilate, who though he tried to get the Jews to release Jesus, ultimately washed his hands of him because the personal cost of following his convictions would have been too great. We know about the crowds that shouted, “Hosanna!” on Sunday morning as Jesus rode into Jerusalem, and by Friday were shouting, “Crucify him!” With all these people to blame, it’s easy to miss one crucial character in the story – you. Do you know nothing of the hypocrisy of the Chief Priests, the denial of Jesus before your friends & colleagues, the washing of your hands when following Jesus is going to cost you too much, and the repeated crucifying of Christ when you choose to live in wilful sin, even though you know how much it cost him to set you free from sin? The Easter story is not just “their” story, it’s your story! But more than that, it’s the story of a King like no other, a Humble King.
